The redesigned Musawah campaign microsite on a laptop and a phone, with the line Because Muslim women and girls are severely discriminated against.

The problem

The campaign's content lived in many PDF files with no shared structure, so it was hard to find anything. The old design was dated and inconsistent, and didn't reflect the campaign.

Two pages of the original source PDFs: dense law tables with mixed fonts and colours.
Before: the content lived in PDF tables like these.

What we did

  1. Restructured the content. We reorganised the microsite and its content by topic and how often people look for it, ready to move into a CMS.

The 12 principal areas of concern, as a side menu on desktop and a country list on mobile.

  2. Filters by country and topic. Visitors can narrow the content without losing their place, which also keeps the mobile journey light.

A topic page filtered to Equality of spouses in marriage, with policy briefs listed by country.

  3. Print-friendly law tables. We redesigned the country law tables into clean layouts that work offline, for advocacy and academic use.

The divorce rights law table, with a country filter and highlighted CEDAW provisions.

  4. Tagging and cross-links. Topics and countries are tagged, so related content links to itself.

  5. A UI guideline. We documented colours and accessibility, type for mobile and desktop, grids and spacing, and the core components, so the site can grow consistently.

The UI guideline type scale, from display headings to body text, with primary and secondary buttons.

Three mobile pages: Mapping of Global Muslim Family Laws, a law detail and a report cover.
