The problem

The Kapitani app had no design system, so screens looked and behaved differently from each other. Core tasks took too many steps: logging a harvest meant 5 taps to reach a hidden form. The manual record-keeping for myGAP certification put farmers off applying.

The old harvest flow: five numbered screens a farmer had to pass through to log a harvest.
Before: 5 taps to reach the harvest form.

What we did

  1. A design system. We built a Figma library of components, styles and guidelines, so every screen follows the same rules.

The Kapitani colour palette: purples, greys, greens, yellows and reds, each in several tints.

Component specifications in Figma: buttons, chips and cards in their variants.

  2. A refreshed brand. We updated the logo and colours and carried them through the app and the design system.

The old Kapitani logo beside the refreshed one, with a bolder wordmark.

  3. Simpler navigation. Home, Farm Diary and Reports became the main tabs, with everything else in a side menu. Onboarding got shorter.

The new Home, Farm Diary and Reports screens side by side.

The side menu next to the Farm Diary screen.

Onboarding: a welcome screen, a farm set-up prompt and the myGAP eligibility badge.

  4. myGAP from the Farm Diary. We designed a myGAP module that pre-fills certification forms from what farmers already log in the Farm Diary.

The myGAP readiness summary and form checklist, filled from Farm Diary records.

myGAP pathway screens: an introduction, a pest monitoring form and the forms checklist.

Result

  • Logging a harvest went from 5 taps to 1–2.
